Find Courage! Be Not Afraid!

Have Courage

Running a little low on courage? Finding courage is not so easy, you say? I know; you are thinking, “Why should I be the one who acts courageous? Look around! You don’t see anyone else stepping up to the plate!”

Hmm…need I say more? If no one acted courageously, and set the example for others to follow, we would all be swallowed up in fear – and fear comes from the devil. When you lack courage and you are aware of what makes you afraid, it is incumbent upon you to face those fears.

For me, I have been historically afraid to take risks for fear of failure. If I think I am going to fail, then fail I will. Continue reading

Courage Cannot Be Denied!

Sts Peter and Paul

Courage cannot be denied! Think about that for a moment. Other people can deny you love, joy and peace, but no one can take courage away from you. That is because courage is found only from within. Solely by the grace of God, you have courage when you need it.

Courage of Martyrs/Persecuted Christians

When I think of courageous people, I first think of martyrs; from the earliest Christians, like the Apostles, to the persecuted Christians of today. They all have one thing in common, the persecutors robbed them of their physical freedom and took their lives because they were believers in Jesus Christ, but the persecutors could not rob them of their courageous love for Jesus Christ.

Final Thoughts on Fortitude

Pope Francis 2

I think the Holy Father, Pope Francis, sums it up best with his catechesis on Fortitude, where it is not only one of the cardinal virtues, but it is also a gift of the Holy Spirit:

With the Holy Spirit’s gift of Fortitude, we can remain faithful. Through counsel and knowledge and understanding, we have the courage to do God’s will even in the face of fear. We are all made to be courageous. Fortitude is there for the asking – just ask for it!

As we close out our discussion on Fortitude, is there anything left unsaid? Enter the conversation in the comments section.

What is justice? We’ll answer that question as we begin to look at the virtue Continue reading

Practicing Fortitude Part III of III

Stop Worrying

Ok, God has graced you with the virtue of fortitude. How do you use it to manage your fears? Worrying about things doesn’t add any value to your life – in fact – it is a waste of your time. Therefore, to practice the virtue of fortitude, stop worrying. Give your worries to God, and let Him take care of them. Stay the course and give the task at hand all that you have to give. Do not give up!

Face your fear and refuse to allow it to conquer you. God is telling you that you are stronger than your fears, especially with Him by your side. Don’t let your fears get in His way of doing wondrous things Continue reading

Waiting

After you have identified the need for increased fortitude and prayed for it, what comes next? We stay the course and do not give up. We practice the virtue of patience, while we wait for God to place all the pieces in order. Take a look at this 24 second video to learn why waiting is worth the wait.

Embracing Fortitude Part III of III

Esther

How has fear impacted your life? Does it rule you, or do you rule it? Have you ever had to face a terminal illness? Have you ever been too afraid to stand up for what you believe in? Have you ever wondered how you would carry on without your spouse in the event of death? Regardless of the circumstances, fear is the opposite of fortitude. When we allow fear to stand in the way, we limit our own capabilities to make a positive difference in our family, community and society. Below is a powerful video of four women: Desirae facing cancer, Ann Marie facing business practices that go against her beliefs, Maria facing the death of her spouse, and Queen Continue reading

Embracing Fortitude Part II of III

Thomas Davis

Have you ever just wanted to give up, because the task at hand seems too hard? Life is hard and overwhelming at times, but the person graced with fortitude will not give up, and will plow ahead to complete the task at hand. How many times have you, or a friend, or a family member come back from a sports injury?  My word, look at Thomas Davis from the Carolina Panthers. He has come back from, not one, not two, but three ACL injuries to his knee. Sometimes football players never play again after one ACL injury. In the 2013 season, after having gone through three restorations of the same knee, he was playing at his professional best. Recuperating Continue reading
