Oxymoron is defined as “a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in ‘cruel kindness’ or ‘to make haste slowly’” (dictionary.com). Here’s another one: jumbo shrimp (my favorite oxymoron).
Well, given today’s politics and discourse that we hear from the politicians, I believe that I am about to coin a new oxymoron: virtuous politician. There must be some, somewhere, don’t you think? I can be hopeful. However, where are they? Has anyone seen one? If so, please let me know, because I would like to shake that person’s hand. I cringe to think that we need to go all the way back to the founding fathers of the United States to find a virtuous politician.
I am sick and tired of hearing hateful remarks from politicians that tear us apart as a nation, rather than speech that brings us together. Where has the virtue of tact gone in our political debates? Where has respect drifted off to?
I am sick and tired of politicians pandering to “big money” for financial support to win elections rather than enacting laws that benefit the common good. Where have prudence, magnanimity, courage, fortitude and bravery gone?
I am sick and tired of the lies, greed and self-centeredness associated with politics and thusly, with politicians. Where are truthfulness, honesty, piety and unselfishness hanging out these days; because surely they are not present in government?
I could go on, but I think by now you get the point. If politicians really want to know why their approval ratings are so low, I say it’s because they need virtue.
When you ignore virtue, you lose your way, and as a country we have surely lost our way. From the look of things, our politicians are leading the charge down into the abyss of sin. We have forgotten that Jesus is the Way, and His way is via the virtues. He calls us to imitate Him.
Oh, virtuous politician, where are you? Do you exist, or are you nothing more than a jumbo shrimp that acts with cruel kindness to make haste slowly?
