Today we commemorate the Blessed Virgin Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth. Earlier this month, I browsed through my stash of unread books. I came across Gifts of the Visitation – Nine Spiritual Encounters with Mary and Elizabeth, by Denise Bossert. With it being the month of May, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, I thought what better book to read? Especially with the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary occurring today, May 31st!
Gifts of the Visitation – Nine Spiritual Encounters with Mary and Elizabeth, by Denise Bossert, is filled with virtue! I thoroughly enjoyed how Bossert took Luke’s accounting of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth and highlighted all the virtue contained within it (Luke 1: 39-80). Bossert devotes nine chapters to discuss nine virtues; so beautifully brought to life in her book. She brings a whole new, refreshing outlook to this passage. From Mary’s spontaneous yes, to her courage needed to fulfill God’s word, to the thanksgiving Mary expresses to God for entrusting her with such an important honor, we traverse with Mary to visit Elizabeth.
As a mother herself, Denise Bossert, correlates stories from her own life with Luke’s Gospel passage. She peppers her life’s stories; intertwined with the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. The reality of Denise Bossert’s life makes the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth that much more enchanting and meaningful.
Grow in Virtue with Gifts of the Visitation
You can read this book in one of two ways:
1) As you would read any other book, from cover to cover
2) As a Novena to the Blessed Virgin; asking for her assistance in obtaining the nine virtues.
I chose to do the latter. I am glad that I did. By reading a chapter per day, I used the time to mull over Bossert’s commentary, soak in the prayer for the selected virtue, and recite the Novena prayers. By reading the book as a Novena, I felt like I was on a spiritual retreat! Not only will this book refresh your spirit, but you will also come to know Mary and Elizabeth better.
With Mary and Elizabeth walking with you on this journey, you will learn more about the virtues. Experience spontaneity, courage, joy, readiness, humility, adventure (zeal), hospitality, wonder and awe (reverence) and thanksgiving. So, if you are looking for ways to grow in virtue, then I highly recommend reading Gifts of the Visitation – Nine Spiritual Encounters with Mary and Elizabeth.
