Embracing Fortitude Part III of III

Esther

How has fear impacted your life? Does it rule you, or do you rule it? Have you ever had to face a terminal illness? Have you ever been too afraid to stand up for what you believe in? Have you ever wondered how you would carry on without your spouse in the event of death? Regardless of the circumstances, fear is the opposite of fortitude. When we allow fear to stand in the way, we limit our own capabilities to make a positive difference in our family, community and society. Below is a powerful video of four women: Desirae facing cancer, Ann Marie facing business practices that go against her beliefs, Maria facing the death of her spouse, and Queen Continue reading

Embracing Fortitude Part II of III

Thomas Davis

Have you ever just wanted to give up, because the task at hand seems too hard? Life is hard and overwhelming at times, but the person graced with fortitude will not give up, and will plow ahead to complete the task at hand. How many times have you, or a friend, or a family member come back from a sports injury?  My word, look at Thomas Davis from the Carolina Panthers. He has come back from, not one, not two, but three ACL injuries to his knee. Sometimes football players never play again after one ACL injury. In the 2013 season, after having gone through three restorations of the same knee, he was playing at his professional best. Recuperating Continue reading

Change

How might we embrace Fortitude in our lives? One way that we can embrace Fortitude is by accepting the uncertainty of change. Life is change. When grounded in faith, we understand that some things are unchangeable, like Truth. With an understanding of Truth, being Jesus Christ, we are able to accept change and all the uncertainty it brings with it, because we know that through faith, Jesus has our best interests in mind. Jesus will see us through the trials and tribulations of our lives. He will not give us more than we can handle. He understands our fears, and gives us the strength to overcome our trials and tribulations.

Here’s a short video that bests depicts what I am Continue reading

Why is Fortitude So Important?

In what areas of your life do you wish you possessed more fortitude to tackle problems? Perhaps it is in dealing with a serious illness, or perhaps there are “demons” in your life that you need to face. We all need fortitude, especially in times of crisis.

The Grace of Fortitude

Whatever your need, the grace of Fortitude gives you the strength and courage to face challenges and emergencies head-on. It doesn’t mean that you are fearless. What it does mean is that you act in spite of fear, because action is necessary.

Think of all of the 9/11 emergency responders running into the Towers, when everyone else was trying to escape to safety. The fortitude of the emergency responders Continue reading

Fortitude in Action in Everyday Life: What Does It Look Like?

Fortitude in ActionHow many times do you witness amazing feats of bravery and courage and ask yourself, could I do that if placed in the same position? What you witnessed was the virtue of fortitude in action. Bravery, courage, strength and might are all lesser virtues, associated with the virtue of fortitude. What makes this virtue so special is that it “ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life.” 1 Fortitude in action allows us to face fear and conquer it; to face the trials of life with grace and strength; to give of our lives for a just cause.
