If You Lived in Afghanistan…

November 30, 2015

Sarah Abraham lived in a small village outside Kabul, Afghanistan with her two young boys, Jeremiah and Amos. She had lost her husband in a gunfire attack two months ago. Now, she was alone, and five months pregnant with a third son. However, the stress of living as a Christian in war-torn Afghanistan weighed heavy on her mind. As a result, while walking to the marketplace one sunny morning, she felt sharp pains and became weak.

Sarah lost her child that day due to a miscarriage. The ensuing grief would be nothing compared to the persecution that she would receive, Continue reading

Faith Hop and Charity

As we close out our reflections on the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity, and before we move on to the cardinal virtues of Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice, I thought we might take a little breather and sit back and enjoy one of the greatest Christian hymns ever written, sung by one of my favorite artists, accompanied on guitar by one of the best guitarists of all time. I hope you enjoy it!

This song speaks of faith, hope and love. What a wonderful way to end a discussion on the theological virtues!

Next up is the virtue Continue reading

Crossing the Threshold

Crossing the Threshold

With faith, we all hope to one day cross the threshold from this life into the next, where we will be with Our Lord and Savior. As we move from the reflections of faith to reflections on hope, I found this musical video from the Casting Crowns to be an appropriate segue. The title of the song is “Already There.” I hope you like it.

I’m interested in learning what you think of the song. Post your thoughts in the comments section and enter the conversation.

What is Hope? We’ll answer that question in our next reflection on Continue reading

Faith – The Beginning of Everlasting Life

March 14, 2014

Holy Trinity

Our goal in this life is to live in accordance with God’s will and His commands, with the hope of spending everlasting life with God in Heaven. Through the eyes of faith, we believe that this can be accomplished only because of God’s mercy on our souls; for no one “earns” their way into Heaven.  We are all sinners and thus, our sinfulness stands between us and God. We must be purified and holy to enter Heaven. Who among us can make that claim today – no one! Through the mercy of God and the sanctification of our Continue reading

Implications of Faith – Trusting God

March 12, 2014

Trusting God Faith is a wondrous gift from God, as well as our assent to believe and trust in Him. Yet, trusting God does not always come so easily for any of us. However, if we are willing to place all of our trust and faith in God, we can expect the following:

Knowing God’s Greatness and Majesty 1

Just think about the intricacies of how the human body works; all of its parts interacting with each other; the ability to procreate. Think about the different seasons and resulting regeneration of plant life that gives us air to breathe and food Continue reading

Persevere in Faith; Running the Race

March 7, 2014

Persevere in FaithTo persevere in faith, we must nourish our faith – we must exercise the spiritual muscle of faith, so-to-speak, or it will die within us; just like our physical muscles would atrophy if we remain sedentary. As with physical exercise, we all vary with our spiritual exercise. This is because everyone is at a different point on their faith journey. As a society, we run the gamut from atheistic to saintly. Yet, most of us fall somewhere in between on the spectrum of faith.

So where does that leave those of us who want to grow in faith? Continue reading

Faith Helps Us Understand Moral Teaching

March 5, 2014

St Paul

As we seek to learn how faith helps us understand moral teaching, I am reminded of a biblical passage from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans:

“For what can be known about God is evident to them because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made”( Romans 1:19-20).

At the time of Saint Paul’s letter, the Romans were for the most part pagans, unknowledgeable in the faith, yet they possessed the innate Continue reading

Faith Seeks Understanding

March 3, 2014

Faith Seeks UnderstandingWouldn’t you like to know God better? If the answer is yes, then your faith is calling for a deeper understanding of God’s revelation (the totality of His divine plan and the mysteries of faith). This can be accomplished through reading of Scripture, regular attendance at a Bible Study Group meeting, going to Church regularly, speaking to a learned religious person.

The more that you get to know someone that you love, the greater that love is for that person. The same is true for our relationship with God. The more that we seek to understand Him, the more we Continue reading
