Bravery and Courage: A Veteran Remembered

Dad and Mom 1942

My parents: Ed and Virginia Duffy. This picture was taken in 1942, during a leave, when my dad was courting my mom. Just look at how he looked at her – with so much love!

Bravery is an attribute that best describes my dad, Ed Duffy; a World War II veteran awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery while serving in Germany. He was a radio operator. As the story goes (from his transcript for why he was awarded the medal), he crawled out into the line of fire to quickly repair a wire connection so that his radio would work. If anyone were to ask him about that day and to elaborate on the story, you would get a quick Continue reading

Five Steps to Conquering Fear

conquering fearFear has no place in the heart, because it doesn’t come from God. Fear is used by the devil to keep us from doing God’s will. The devil will attempt to make us doubt our abilities, especially the ability to be courageous. How do we effectively shut the devil out and listen only to God? How do we become courageous?

We start with these five steps:

Pray

Ask the Lord to make His presence known to you in your heart; so that you know He is always with you, and will never leave you. “Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am your God. I will strengthen you, and help you, and uphold you with my Continue reading

Could it be Courage? – Guest Post by Jeannie Ewing

“I’ve always admired how you just dive in and face whatever challenge is ahead of you,” my mother remarked with admiration to me one evening.  Much to her surprise, I was taken aback.  I’d never given much thought to my approach at handling difficulties, so her comment threw me off guard.

“Well, thank you,” I stammered, desperately attempting to come up with a more eloquent response.  I had nothing.  But her comment did get me thinking: Why do I respond the way I do when uncertainty and hardship emerge in my life?

The truth is I have battled fears on a daily basis due to Continue reading

Find Courage! Be Not Afraid!

Have Courage

Running a little low on courage? Finding courage is not so easy, you say? I know; you are thinking, “Why should I be the one who acts courageous? Look around! You don’t see anyone else stepping up to the plate!”

Hmm…need I say more? If no one acted courageously, and set the example for others to follow, we would all be swallowed up in fear – and fear comes from the devil. When you lack courage and you are aware of what makes you afraid, it is incumbent upon you to face those fears.

For me, I have been historically afraid to take risks for fear of failure. If I think I am going to fail, then fail I will. Continue reading

Courage Cannot Be Denied!

Sts Peter and Paul

Courage cannot be denied! Think about that for a moment. Other people can deny you love, joy and peace, but no one can take courage away from you. That is because courage is found only from within. Solely by the grace of God, you have courage when you need it.

Courage of Martyrs/Persecuted Christians

When I think of courageous people, I first think of martyrs; from the earliest Christians, like the Apostles, to the persecuted Christians of today. They all have one thing in common, the persecutors robbed them of their physical freedom and took their lives because they were believers in Jesus Christ, but the persecutors could not rob them of their courageous love for Jesus Christ.

Courage of Continue reading
