Blessed are the Stressed: Secrets to a Happy Heart from a Crabby Mystic, by Mary Lea Hill, FSP
Feeling stressed, but not necessarily blessed? Do you want to feel better about the direction of your life? Well, Blessed are the Stressed: Secrets to a Happy Heart from a Crabby Mystic, by Sister Mary Lea Hill, FSP focuses on reducing your stress by embracing the tenets of the Beatitudes. Specifically, this book addresses the importance the Beatitudes play in your life, especially in a culture that tells us that happiness can be found in a slick new car, or a fancy new house. According to Sister Mary Lea, true happiness, or blessedness, is found in being meek, striving for justice, embracing humility, extending mercy, relishing peace. My favorite quote from the book sums up why it is important to focus on these virtues when contemplating the Beatitudes:
Poverty of spirit leaves room for God…meekness fills you with quiet strength, yearning for righteousness gives you holy alertness, mercy makes you a mirror of the divine, purity of heart keeps your attention fixed on God, peacefulness gives you a sense of empathy for others. All of these Beatitudes arm you with everything you need (p. 114).
So, if you want to right your ship, change your course, and sail towards God, rather than wallow in the abyss of stress, in which you currently reside, I suggest starting the process by getting a copy of this book. It’s a fast easy read, packed with valuable information. It’s the kind of book that can be read in small bits; like a few very short chapters at a time. Then step back and give some thought to the insightful questions that Sister Mary Lea poses at the end of each chapter. This book provides a means for you to sincerely get in touch with yourself and God. I highly recommend it!
